Hello! My name is Franxine Bautista, and I’m 22 years old. I am a student at University of Illinois at Chicago, majoring in English with a concentration in creative writing. I was born in Pateros, Metro Manila, Philippines, where I grew up loving balut, isaw, and other foods people find gross; I then moved to Chicago at the age of ten. As an immigrant whose first language was not English, I fell in love with writing wholly and unabashedly. Plagued with culture shock and homesickness at a young age, it was writing that helped me through these challenges. I turned to poetry to understand not only myself but the world around me as I wrote about anything and everything, slowly filling several notebooks in the process.
When I’m not writing, I make things with my hands. I collected some of my poetry in a chapbook, with plans of refining and revising for a better version in the future. I collaged together a mini zine with my one of my poems. I am passionate about creativity, constantly experimenting with my poetry, conjuring up ideas for fictional stories I can make real with words, and physically creating art whenever I can.
I find solace in stories and storytelling. I will tell my own stories someday with the hopes of reaching the likes of me, once in need of friends, a shoulder to lean on, and inspiration to create for themselves. I’ll defend the use of the oxford comma until my last breath.
